Maria McKinney

June/July/August 2011

The artist Maria McKinney is from Inishowen. She is interested in the folk art that stems from rural mythology stretching back thousands of years and in this project for Artlink and the 2011 Inishowen Agricultural Society Annual Show, McKinney blends this interest with a fascination with the ‘Belgian Blue’ cattle breed. For this year’s Inishowen Agricultural Show the artist has designed two sets of prize garlands: one garland design is to be awarded to winners of the Belgian Blue classification; the other is to be awarded to the rest of the Championwinning cattle. These new garlands are inspired by harvest knots. An age-old activity of binding straw into decorative shapes, traditionally used as blessings for buildings or given as a token of affection, making harvest knots has its origins in paganism and formed part of an annual ritual that worshipped the spirit of the corn/wheat/harvest.

Artlink is a visual arts organization in Inishowen which seeks to make our place in the heart of rural Donegal by commissioning artwork that originates in traditional activities and gives it a contemporary edge.
